Wuhan University of Technology is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, and is one of the first batch of universities included in the national "211 Project" and "double first-class" construction. It is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport and other ministries. The school's history originated from the Hubei Craft School established in 1898. In the past 123 years, especially in the past 70 years, the school has trained more than 600,000 senior professionals. It is the largest school in terms of training talents for the three major industries of building materials, transportation and automobile among the universities directly under the Ministry of Education. It has become an important base for high-level talent training and scientific and technological innovation in China's "three major industries". At present, the university has more than 36,000 undergraduate students, more than 18,000 doctoral and master's students, and more than 1,700 international students.
The university has 40 national and provincial scientific research bases, including the State Key Laboratory of New Materials Composite Technology, the State Key Laboratory of Silicate Building Materials, the State Engineering Laboratory of Optical Fiber Sensing Technology, and the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Water Transport Safety. There are three provincial and ministerial-level collaborative innovation centers, namely, the Collaborative Innovation Center of the Ministry of Inland Waterway Intelligent Shipping and Transportation, the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Auto Parts Technology, and the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Security Early Warning and Emergency Linkage Technology. The university has been approved as a pilot unit for the construction of a transportation power, selected as one of the first batch of national intellectual property demonstration universities, the second batch of scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases of higher education, and co-built 257 scientific and educational cooperation and achievement transformation institutions such as industry-education integration demonstration zones, science and education innovation parks, and industrial technology research institutes with local governments and industrial enterprises. Since 2010, the school has won 2 National Natural Science Awards, 16 Technological invention awards and science and technology progress Awards as the first completed unit, and 66 provincial and ministerial first prizes and above; As a participating unit, it won 1 national Science and Technology Progress special award and 2 first prizes; 5524 authorized invention patents; Published 1 paper in the world's top academic journals Science and 4 papers in Nature.
The university has established personnel training and scientific and technological cooperation relations with more than 190 universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, Australia, Russia, the Netherlands and other countries, and has hired more than 200 well-known scholars at home and abroad as strategic scientists, chair professors, visiting professors and honorary professors. In addition, 16 high-level international research platforms have been established with famous foreign universities and research institutions. Relying on the university, the Ministry of Science and Technology has successively established seven national and provincial international science and technology cooperation bases, including the International Joint Laboratory of New Materials Composite Technology, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of environmentally friendly Building Materials, and the International science and Technology Cooperation Base of Intelligent Shipping and Maritime safety. In 2016, the school's first overseas campus, established in cooperation with the University of Wales Trinity St David in the UK, was officially launched. In 2018, the University cooperated with Aix-Marseille University in France to establish the Aix-Marseille College of Wuhan University of Technology.
