Tianjin Polytechnic University is a full-time college jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipality. The school has a long history, founded in 1912, renamed Tianjin Polytechnic University in 2000, was selected as the national "double first-class" world-class discipline construction university in 2017, and was approved by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and Tianjin University in 2018. It is one of the earliest institutions to carry out textile higher education in China, and has developed into a work-based university. A multi-subject comprehensive university with coordinated development of engineering, science, arts, management, economics, law, arts and medicine.
The school covers a total area of 1.95 million square meters, with a total construction area of 860,000 square meters. The university consists of 5 academic departments, 24 colleges, 1 Academy and 2 affiliated hospitals. Currently, there are more than 22,000 undergraduates, more than 4700 full-time master's students, nearly 500 doctoral students, more than 1,500 adult education students, and more than 2,050 international students (more than 500 degree students).

The university has 65 undergraduate majors, including 15 state-level first-class majors, 6 state-level characteristic majors, 4 city-level first-class majors, 15 Tianjin brand majors, 6 Tianjin strategic emerging industries related majors, 8 Tianjin advantages and characteristics majors, 12 application-oriented majors, 2 of which have passed the engineering education professional certification. It has the first State key laboratory of Separation Membrane and membrane Process jointly built by the province and the Ministry among Tianjin universities, and has 1 national international joint research center, 2 national and local joint engineering research centers, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and 8 key laboratories of Tianjin. There are 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 6 Tianjin Engineering Centers, 6 Tianjin International Joint Research Centers, 1 key research base of Humanities and social Sciences in Tianjin, and Tianjin Research Center of Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, Tianjin Membrane Separation Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, Tianjin Scientific and Technological Achievements Transformation Center, and Tianjin Industrial Design Center. In recent years, it has undertaken nearly a thousand projects of "973" program, "863" program, National Key research and development program projects (topics), National Social Science Foundation projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects and related provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, and has made a number of landmark and breakthrough achievements, winning 11 for nine consecutive years and 13 national science and technology awards. The university has established long-term friendly cooperation and exchange relations with more than 110 universities or institutions in more than 60 countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Finland, Australia, the United States, South Korea and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The school was shortlisted for two awards in the 2020 Times Higher Education Asia Awards, joined the European Textile University Alliance, established the country's first Confucius Institute in Burkina Faso, and co-built the "Punjab Tianjin Technical University" with Pakistan's Punjab province.
